We live in strange times. Now more than ever it is crucial to be aware of our mindset if we don’t want to get caught in the panic wave we are witnessing every day.

It is hard to see that some countries have even declared the state of emergency to contain the coronavirus crisis.

By nature, we don’t like uncertainty or the unknown. But unfortunately, we can’t control what’s going to happen, it is impossible to know! This  might be hard to digest, but that’s why is so important to have the right mindset in situations like this.

Having the right mindset is not about being irresponsible and not taking sensible precautions. It is not about denying the situation, it is about managing the situation so it doesn’t control us.

There are simple actions we can take to stay calm and continue with our lives without losing our mind.

TIPS TO STAY CALM AND AT EASE WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS PANICKING:

1. Turn off the TV and stay away from social media as much as you can.

I know you want to be informed, and that is only sensible. But limit the time of the day you’re going to spend hearing or reading about the virus. Check once a day to be aware of important announcements. That’s all you need to know. The rest is a torture.

If you watch the TV for hours, you’re bombarding your mind with DANGER DANGER DANGER, FEAR FEAR FEAR, ANGER ANGER ANGER.

Let me tell you something, fear is one of the worst enemies of your immune system. It is a stressor that activates your flight or fight response. We are not designed to be in this state for long periods of times, it is a mechanism for survival. So if you are in this state for many hours a day, every day of the week, body functions like digestion, sleep and the immune system will be heavily impacted. Which will make you more likely to get sick.

In summary, more fear = more chances of getting the virus.

Cut off your source of fear and not only you will feel better mentally but also physically.

Action: Count the hours you spent talking or hearing about the virus yesterday. Aim to at least half it by tomorrow.

2. Meditate.

I know you might be thinking: and how can I not feel scared given the current situation?

So here is my second tip – meditate.

I’m increasing my daily meditation time to make sure I don’t get caught in negative thoughts.

Now it’s the perfect time to listen to some guided meditations that will help you feel relaxed and connected to the here and now.

Start with a short one if you are new to meditation.

There are many videos available in youtube and other platforms, pick one that resonates with you and listen to it every time you feel stressed or worrying too much.

Action: Pick your favourite guided meditation or search a new one and set some time in your dairy to listen to it daily.

3. Use your time at home wisely.

Do you remember all those things you have in your to-do list and you never have time for? Or those things you really want to do but there’s always something more important?

Now it’s the perfect time to catch-up on reading, take that course you always wanted to do or just spend time on your own taking care of yourself, reassessing your career, goals, etc.

Replace the activities you would normally do with other hobbies or plans at home. Don’t use that time to worry or get caught in negative watsapp groups.

I’m using this time to work on my business, plan the rest of the year AND create some online content which is something I’ve always wanted to do but I had never found the time to do! (More info coming soon, subscribe to my Newsletter if you want to be the first to find out more about it).

Action: Think of one activity you always wanted to do that you have been postponing because of other commitments and start this week!

4. Prioritise having a healthy lifestyle.

With many events being cancelled, and the options to socialise being dramatically reduced, it is very tempting to get pizza for dinner, have chocolate snacks all the time and sit on the sofa for hours.

But now it’s the time to take of your health more than ever!

Eat healthy food, sleep well and exercise. If you feel lazy about exercising at home, get a virtual work-out buddy so you can motivate each other.

Action: Write down 3 healthy habits that you want to add to your daily routine and set a reminder in your phone.

5. Get support.

I always work with a therapist or coach to improve myself and handle difficult situations. I find it even more useful in moments like these, when it’s so easy to get caught in fear and negativity.

So if you have been thinking about getting some coaching, now it’s the perfect time to work on your mindset or even plan how to boost your career!
