We all want to be successful, don’t we?
I’m sure you’ve seen many people posting on social media like they were a celebrity.
They post their achievements, pictures from incredible trips, pictures of their sculptured bodies in the gym, inspirational quotes and you think… why can’t that be me?!
Well, first of all, no one is posting about their failures so don’t assume everything is perfect in their lives only because they look happy in the pictures.
Success is not something that comes out of nowhere, by chance. It is not a matter of luck. It is a journey, an attitude, it only happens when we are centered, determined, work hard and have the right mindset.
So how can we succeed in life? While there isn’t a magic formula, there are some things that ARE A MUST if you want to be successful:
1. Have a clear definition of what success means to you.
It is very common to think of success in terms of money and power. That might be the definition of success for some people, but not necessarily for everyone.
There are many other things that can be considered as being successful.
Maybe you want to have a family and a house by the sea, have a fulfilling career, live according to your values or have time and good health to travel the world.
Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it. Dalai Lama
The very first thing you need to do to achieve success is to understand what success means to you.
You might want to do some more exploration on your own or with the guidance of a Coach, but you can start asking yourself the following questions:
Who do you admire? What do they do? How do they do it? What values do they show? What do they achieve? How do they feel? What does a random day in their lives look like?
2. Review your habits
Once you have an idea of your definition of success, make a list of your daily habits.
Include any activities that are part of your routine and anything you do without having to think about it.
What is the very first thing you do when you wake up? Do you check social media or drink a glass of water? Do you go for a walk or smoke a cigarette? What habits do you repeat every single day?
Now, the most important question is: Are those habits taking you closer to your goals? Or holding you back? Is that something your ‘heroes’ from the first point would do?
Consider replacing the habits that are not doing you any good with healthy, nurturing habits that will take you closer to your image of success.
3. Work on your mindset
No one said the path to success would be easy. Think of the people you admire again. Do they get up early or sleep until midday? Do they waste money or invest wisely? What type of people do they surround themselves with? Do they care about how they feel or about how they look?
If you want to achieve your goals (regardless of what they are) you will need determination and discipline, that’s for sure.
If you want to make money, you will have to work smart. If you want to look good, you will have to work out and eat healthily. If you want to have a worthy relationship you will have to nurture it.
That takes effort, yes. But isn’t it worth it?
Always keep your motivation in mind.
This is very common: Step 1: You write your New Year’s Eve resolutions on the 1st of January with a lot of excitement. Step 2: You start going to the gym/saving money/eating more vegetables. Step 3: By February, after a few tough weeks/birthday parties, you completely forget your original motivation and you go back to watching Netflix after work/spending lots of money on expensive cocktails/eating Nutella crepes for dinner.
Don’t get me wrong, life is not about being army-like strict or not having fun at all.
But if you want to achieve results, you will need to set priorities and give up some old habits.
So why do we give up before succeeding? Very often, we forget our original motivation.
I always recommend my clients to have something visible that reminds them of their motivation. It can be a picture of your desired house or holidays, an alarm every morning, a post-it on your desk or wall or even setting a picture as your phone/laptop background.
The more you see it, the more likely you will stay motivated and committed to your goals.
4. Remove your limiting beliefs.
I can’t emphasise enough how important this is. We all have beliefs that are no longer serving us. Have you ever heard yourself saying things like “you’re not good enough”, “you can’t do that”, “you don’t deserve it”, “that will never happen to me” ?
Limiting beliefs alert!!
Limiting beliefs can be removed and replaced with more positive empowering messages, do it!
Here is an article on how to identify and remove limiting beliefs.
5. Let go of what you no longer need
Say goodbye to toxic relationships, bad habits, old beliefs. Make space in your life for new experiences to come.
Like you would make space in your wardrobe for new clothes.
By the way, did you know that changing the way we dress (for example by throwing away old, cheap clothes and dressing our absolute best) has a massive impact on our mindset?
Make a list of everything that is holding you back from succeeding and remove it from your life. I know it can be painful if you’re emotionally attached to it, but it will be worth it.
6. Surround yourself with successful people
Last but not least, it is much easier to succeed if you’re surrounded by people who have achieved similar goals to yours before.
Learn from them. Ask for advice. Observe what they do, how they do it, get ideas from them. Look for a Mentor or Coach.
Make new friends with similar interests to yours.
It’s easier to grow when you are surrounded by people who have the right mind-set and are on a similar path to yours.
